Job Introduction

TLT’s financial regulation group has grown significantly in recent years to become one of the largest financial regulation practices in the UK with lawyers located in London and the regions, combining contentious and non-contentious support with regulatory matters. 

The team has a very strong reputation for retail financial services regulation (including regulated lending and banking, consumer credit and mortgages) and pensions regulatory matters. The team is ranked Tier 3 in Chambers and Partners for Consumer Finance. The team is currently growing and developing its retail banking practice.

In addition to its focus on the retail financial services sector, the team has a growing wider financial regulation practice. This practice covers wealth and asset management, and funds and funds management. 

The team is highly ambitious and hard-working. Our clients and our employees would describe us as energetic, entrepreneurial & driven. The financial regulation practice sits within the wider Financial Services Disputes and Investigations Team. 

We want you to be successful. You will manage your own caseloads ensuring your experience is varied and broad. Through our national service lines you will work with notable clients and become a sector specialist. You will receive bespoke training throughout your career ensuring you have the technical and commercial skills to build an effective and successful practice.

Role Responsibility

This role is primarily to support and develop the consumer finance practice. In particular advising banks, building societies and specialist lenders on consumer finance law and regulation (in particular, the consumer, motor and asset finance practices).

You will operate as an Associate or Legal Director:

  • Providing strategic and commercial legal advice across a range of consumer finance matters, including matters which are high-value, reputationally sensitive, and which can involve working to tight deadlines
  • Managing and supervising a team of associates and solicitors. Providing support, coaching and guidance to members of the team and supporting the junior lawyers with their technical and professional development
  • Being a senior member of the consumer finance team and actively working with the partners to set the strategy for the team and continue to grow and develop the team and its specialist practice areas
  • Developing strong working relationships with contacts at key financial services clients
  • Being a ‘go-to’ person for consumer finance (including consumer, motor and asset finance)
  • Actively engaging in business development activities with clients and potential clients, particularly in working alongside the partners to grow and develop the consumer finance practice.

We are seeking an Associate (6 – 10 PQE) to join our team, with excellent prospects for career development. Anyone taking up this role can expect the have the opportunity to play a significant part in the development of our consumer finance practice. 

The team works closely together, but the candidate we are seeking is likely to be supporting and developing our consumer finance practice.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of six years PQE
  • Consumer finance experience gained within a comparable environment and at an appropriate level, ideally including experience in the retail financial services sector working with either consumer, motor or asset finance products
  • A real and genuine interest in financial regulation and in particular the consumer finance sector
  • Experience of building strong client relationships.

Our team operates nationally, so anyone taking up this role can be based from our London, Manchester or Edinburgh office.
