Note:This is a full-time Administrative position (37.5 hours per week).

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director, Athletics and Recreation, is responsible for the creation, integration and ongoing delivery of College-wide high-quality programs, services, facilities and opportunities that promote the fitness, health and wellbeing of students, staff and the community. The incumbent is responsible for the leadership and development of a dedicated professional team that takes a student-centered approach to the operation of the department, including the development and maintenance of a strategic plan with a focus on student opportunities that augment their collegial experience; opportunities supporting academic success, enhancing employability skills, and lifelong personal wellbeing.

The Director leads a nationally recognized Varsity program, maintaining a positive student athlete experience as a major component of the overall student experience. The Director leads a program of intramural/extramural sports and Esports teams. The Director manages the College’s athletic facilities including the Student Wellness Centre, gyms, outdoor courts and playing fields and oversees the facilities scheduling to meet the needs of academic programs, the Athletic program, the Fanshawe Student Union and community users. The incumbent develops and ensures the optimal use of an operating budget provided through dedicated student fees, working in cooperation with various College departments, ensuring positive interdisciplinary and cross-functional collaboration.

Education

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary 4-year degree in Physical Education or Kinesiology
  • Master’s degree in Kinesiology or related discipline is an asset
  • Minimum 9 years’ related progressive work experience in post-secondary or community sports administration and recreation services and activities
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered; preference will be given to applicants meeting the education requirements
  • Certified First Aid and CPR
  • Strong knowledge of post-secondary educational structure, sports and recreation
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, develop and manage a customer-focused service team
  • Demonstrated skills in related areas such as coaching theory and practice, athletics therapy, health and safety risk assessment related to athletics
  • Demonstrated budget development, financial acumen and management skills
  • Experience coaching sports at a competitive/elite level
  • Athletic facilities management experience
  • Demonstrated human resources management, supervisory skills and experience
  • Highly developed problem-solving/decision making and conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent planning and time management skills to develop indoor outdoor sports programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated leadership within the learning environment re: student development, community development and leadership education
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute and collaborate effectively as part of a management team
  • Experience in sport and recreation program development and community and marketing connection development
