Job Description

6a Architects is seeking a director of business operations to join its team in London.

Introduction

6a architects was founded by Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald in 2001 and has since won an international reputation for its award-winning housing, cultural, educational and mixed-use projects. Domus magazine ranked the practice among the 50 best architecture firms in the world in 2020.

The practice started in London by creating cultural projects in complex historic settings, bringing contemporary uses to important heritage sites. Raven Row (listed Grade I) and the South London Gallery (listed Grade II) are models of adaptive reuse that both won RIBA National Awards. More recently, 6a's RIBA Award-winning expansion of MK Gallery reinterpreted the utopian history of Milton Keynes into an instant landmark, named by The Observer in 2019 as the best building of the year. Other projects include a contemporary art foundation in a listed New York factory; a comprehensive restoration and extension of Skinners' Hall (Scheduled Ancient Monument) in the City of London; and a holistic collaboration with artist Caragh Thuring for the refurbishment and extension of Holborn House Community Centre.

6a is currently leading a major reimagining of theTateLiverpool landmark gallery on Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. 6a won the tender to transform the renowned gallery's spaces following an open competition which garnered applications from around the world.

6a's projects are firmly rooted in place - drawing on social history and constructional traditions while making meaningful connections to climate and cultural conditions. In Hamburg, the history of the Hanseatic League was the basis for a powerful but subtle social housing development on the harbourfront; and in Melbourne, multiculturalism and climate change inspired an innovative landscape-led approach to a large inner-city mixed-use development. 6a is also renowned for its integration of landscape into complex building projects, and its innovative use of materials.

Purpose

This newly created role is responsible for 6a's business, people and financial operations. The role oversees operations, finances and human resources: supporting new business development initiatives, nurturing and developing the 6a team, steering talent development plans, and delivering on the organisation's wider ambitions.

The successful candidate will have proven business leadership experience within a design-focused organisation.
