Job Description

Doctoral Degree Program in Computer Science, University of Sheffield, United Kingdom

Join the University of Sheffield’s Computer Science department for a groundbreaking PhD opportunity in neuromorphic computing. This project delves into the realm of machine learning and physics, aiming to revolutionize computing paradigms by emulating the human brain’s structure. Led by Dr. Matthew Ellis, this scholarship focuses on advancing machine learning methods, particularly neural differential equations, to predict the dynamics of experimental systems designed for neuromorphic computing.

Neuromorphic devices emulate the human brain’s structure to develop resource-efficient computing systems. This project aims to utilize bespoke nanoscale devices as ‘complex’ neurons, trained by digital twins, machine learning models predicting physical systems. The research will advance machine learning methods, focusing on neural differential equations to predict experimental system dynamics for neuromorphic computing.

The PhD studentship covers standard UK home tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend at the standard UK Research Council rate (£19,237 for 2024/25) for 3.5 years. Overseas students are eligible but must cover the difference between UK and overseas tuition fees. Further information is available here.

Minimum 2.1 Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Physics, etc), or equivalent. Applicants should be self-motivated with experience in machine learning and/or computational modeling, possessing strong programming skills, ideally in Python. For non-native English speakers, an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with no less than 6.0 in each component, is required.

Documents

Applicants must submit a short (up to 3 A4 pages) research statement outlining reasons for applying, approach to the research, and detailing skills and experience in the topic area. Additional documents and the application form can be found at link.

Application

Applications must be made directly to the University of Sheffield using the Postgraduate Online Application Form, with Dr. Matt Ellis named as the proposed supervisor. Applicants should only apply for one of the three projects advertised with Dr. Matt Ellis.
