This is a unique opportunity to join University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHs Foundation Trust (UHDB) as a senior leader in the communications team. 


With five hospital sites and more than 14,000 staff, we have a lot to communicate and celebrate and are looking for an experienced, innovative communications professional to help inspire and lead our work.


Reporting to and deputising for the associate director of communications, we want someone who can make the most of opportunities and provide professional advice and expertise across all parts of the organisation.

The communications team remit covers everything from media work, internal comms and social media to website, events management and design.

Main duties of the job


The head of communications is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of effective, high-quality communications strategies and outputs to support the Trust's vision to deliver exceptional care together.


They provide strategic communications advice to the Trust’s board and executive teams, often handling very sensitive and complex issues, as well as giving positive and professional leadership to the communications department.


With a leading role in media handling, the head of communications needs to develop effective relationships with media colleagues, be able to utilise proactive opportunities, and deal with media enquiries efficiently and effectively.


In turn they will support internal communications for the Trust, both Trust-wide and with specific departments, to make sure teams have the information they need to do their jobs well.


The ability to get things done professionally and calmly whilst supporting a team is essential.
