Job Description

Role: Legal Counsel

Location: London

Reporting to: Head of Legal, UK & Africa and Group Services

Overview: Commercially orientated mid-level lawyer, ideally with experience in some or all of the following: general commercial contracts including outsourcing services, real estate leases & retail space concession agreements, regulatory/ financial services, IT/IP, data protection and potentially corporate. Reporting to the Head of Legal, this role will operate at all levels of the business and be expected to hit the ground running making an immediate commercial impact. 

Travelex Legal: The Travelex Legal & Co Sec team numbers 30 globally, 14 of whom are based in London; with others based in Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, San Paulo and Mumbai. The legal team in London supports both Travelex’s consumer retail (B2C store/online) and partner (B2B wholesale and outsourcing) businesses in the UK and Africa, as well as its Group Services function.  Historically, the business has also experienced a lot of corporate/transactional, and restructuring.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a range of commercial contracts including partner outsourcing services/ supply agreements and real estate leases/ concession agreements.
  • Advising the Marketing team on promotions, product terms & conditions and online retailing channel.
  • Advising on joint ventures and corporate transactions where appropriate
  • General in-house lawyer functions, including dispute resolution, IP, IT, some competition law and data protection.
  • Instructing and managing external counsel in various jurisdictions
  • Keeping abreast of legislative developments and their potential impact on the business units and operations
  • Managing and contributing to team precedents, know-how and development.
  • Offering practical and focused training to the business and the wider legal team.
  • Development of tools, templates and precedents that can be easily utilised by the business on a ‘self serve’ basis.

    Candidate competencies:

  • Qualified UK lawyer
  • From a major law firm or current in-house role, previous in-house or client secondment experience and experience of project managing international work desirable
  • Experience in some of the following would be required:

    - Commercial contract work i.e. agency, distribution, supply, outsourcing, licensing, information technology/ online retailing, joint venture and acquisition/ disposal agreements

    - Real estate

  • Commercial and business focused approach essential, with experience in negotiating commercial as well as legal points
  • A self-motivated, pro-active hard worker with the ability to manage a varied and high volume workload and meet deadlines.
  • A highly effective communicator, you will be able to:
    • explain complex legal concepts to all levels of the business, including senior management
    • have an inquisitive and assertive approach
    • build a strong and lasting internal network
    • communicate in an honest and engaging style to leave a positive impression.
