Job Description

We're looking for a talented Legal Counsel with a strong regulatory and product background to join our Legal team. The Legal Counsel will be expected to advise on compliance with financial services and payments regulations, interact with regulators and assist in the implementation of broader regulatory change projects across the Checkout.com group.

As Legal Counsel you will work closely with all areas of the business in our offices around the globe. You will need to take a consultative and collaborative approach to solving complex legal and business issues in a fast-moving environment.

As you will be collaborating with all core functions within the company, the successful candidate should be able to handle multiple areas of responsibilities autonomously, demonstrating excellent critical judgment with hands-on approach. This is a great opportunity to work on a broad range of projects across multiple jurisdictions, learn new areas of law and play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth. You will be based in London at our global head office and report into a Senior Legal Counsel also based in London.

You will be joining an expanding legal team in one of Europe's most valuable fintechs. Checkout Legal's mission is to be a legal team that exceeds expectations. We do this by providing pragmatic and trusted advice and balancing risk management by fusing high performance, innovation, collaboration and integrity.

How you'll make an impact:

  • Partner with our commercial, product, treasury, and compliance teams, acting as a real-time legal advisor to understand their needs and help find creative solutions to achieve business objectives
  • Support relationships with regulators on license-related matters
  • Review payments product structures, flows and terms to ensure compliance with legal requirements
  • Advise on payments regulatory matters including compliance with payments laws and related regulations across our different jurisdictions
  • Advise on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including with respect to group regulatory change projects
  • Advise the business on market expansion, researching and evaluating new territories and applying for new licenses or expanding scope of existing licenses
  • Advise key business functions on new regulatory developments impacting our operations, products and contractual commitments
Qualifications
  • Qualified solicitor/lawyer (5-8 PQE) with strong post-qualification experience either in-house or in private practice
  • Strong understanding of legal principles applicable to payments, including the payments ecosystem and payments regulatory and licensing strategy/execution, and to broader financial institutions
  • Previous FinTech, start-up, payments and/or financial institution experience is desirable but not essential
  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands
  • Ability to handle and deliver on numerous high-priority projects concurrently
  • Comfortable with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture
  • A practical, solutions-oriented focus to solving legal challenges\
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed, flexing the approach as the matter requires
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
